Had I been unkind I might have replied "Even your acne?", but I was feeling benevolent so I just told him to enjoy the sunshine.

Were you hoping that a melanoma later in life might shake his optimism?
I think such cheerfulness depends on an unspoken assumption that misfortunes are only experienced by other people, whose sufferings somehow contribute to the GREATER GOOD
