I've recently been surprised how quickly my socks develop holes. I buy socks in packets of half a dozen or so, yet a packet seems to last only a few months.
I think that next time I buy a packet I shall record the life of its contents.
In what strange ways do we pensioners while away our twilight years !!

I found that as I passed 40 holes in socks got more frequent, but looking at my toenails told me why! What had been thin, almost transparent nails on my big toes seemed to have turned almost overnight into thick, only semi-translucent claws, which were basically tearing holes into my socks.
I don't think it's a fungal infection, as the nails are not loose or flaking or wet or anything like that; they just seem to have got a lot thicker and consequently harder. Nowadays I can only cut them, even with proper nail clippers, straight after a soaking in a long bath; a few hours later and they've hardened up again.
